About The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation 

It was founded by Allan Gray in 2005 out of his dream to create a sustainable contribution to the country, by helping students who are the future entrepreneurs of Southern Africa.

It invests in the education and development of individuals with entrepreneurial potential within Southern Africa. They do so because they believe that these curious, driven and responsibly minded young people are capable of significantly, positively and permanently impacting the economic lives of the communities, cities and possibly even the country they operate in.

About The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Fellowship Programme

It is inviting students to apply for bursary funding, for the 2023 academic year.

Fields Of Study Covered By The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Fellowship Programme

The following fields are covered by the Fellowship Programme:
  • Arts
  • Commerce
  • Engineering
  • Health Science (excluding Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science)
  • Humanities
  • Law
  • Science

Expenses Covered By The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Fellowship Programme

The fellowship programme will provide cover for the following expenses:
  • Tuition fees
  • Prescribed books
  • Accommodation at university residence
  • Meals
  • Monthly living stipend 
  • A tutor allowance.

Note:
If you stay in a household with a total annual household income of R1 million and less, you will receive full funding, and if you stay in a household with a total annual household income of more than R1 million will receive needs-based funding.

Eligibility Criteria For The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Fellowship Programme

You must meet all the following minimum requirements for the fellowship programme. If you do not meet the minimum requirements, your application will not be considered. 
  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must be under 21 years old or younger in 2022
  • You must be currently in Matric
  • You must have achieved a minimum result of 60% for Mathematics or a minimum result of 80% for Mathematical Literacy in Grade 11 final results
  • You must have achieved a minimum overall average of 70% for Grade 11 final results (excluding Life Orientation)
  • You must intend on studying towards a degree qualification within one of the fields of study listed above
  • You must intend on studying at one of the following partner universities: University of Johannesburg, University of the Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria, University of Cape Town, University of the Western Cape, Stellenbosch University, Rhodes University, Nelson Mandela University, University of KwaZulu-Natal, University of the Free State
  • You must believe in the future of South Africa
  • You must have strong entrepreneurial flair and passion

The following criteria is for those who already meet the criteria. If you have done the following, you will be a preferred candidate:
  • Leadership role at school or university (including being a prefect/ sports team captain/ member of the SRC)
  • Formal awards at school or university (including Academic/ Cultural/ Service awards)
  • Participation in any sporting or cultural activities at school, university or outside this environment
  • Started an activity or project that has left a positive impact in your school, university, community or environment
  • An occasion where you have achieved success despite difficulty
  • Demonstration of tenacity, perseverance and goal-oriented behaviour
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to change
  • Ability to manage your emotions, as well as be aware of the emotions of people around you and react appropriately

Documentation Required For The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Fellowship Programme

The following documentation is required for the programme. If all the following documentation is not submitted, your application will not be considered.
  • ID document (certified copy)
  • Grade 11 final academic record, if this is your most recent report (certified copy)
  • Grade 12 latest academic record, if available (certified copy)
  • Academic/ recognition/ extra-curricular awards received in Grade 10/ 11/ 12 (certified copies)
  • Reference from an Educator (stamped, signed and sealed in a separate envelope)
